As part of the Smokefree Action Plan 2021, Hāpai Te Hauora since December 2021 now leads a national work stream to provide Health Promotion and Community Activation Services, which works across a wide range of community engagement activities to develop strong stakeholder relationships. Community engagement is key, and we facilitate this through our team of Community Activators who execute community led activities and events that advocate Smokefree Kaupapa. These Community Activators are located across the four main health regions of Aotearoa, Northland/Auckland, Midlands, Central and the South Island.
Community health promotion is focussed at the local level by the Community Activation team through events and building capacity for our communities to achieve collective capability. Māori values are the basis of how we operate, including building collective capability and achieving Smokefree 2025 through holistic community focussed Kaupapa. We are led by our communities and co-design workshops for Smokefree engagement are key aspects of our Smokefree health promotion and community activation work stream.
Some recent successful Community Activations have happened over the “We’re Backing You” World Smokefree May campaign.
- Schools Tour in Tamaki Makaurau
- Switch it Up concert
- Boxfit classes in Rotorua
- Partnership with Stoke Rugby Club
You can read more about these activations and other relevant mahi in our monthly Tobacco Control Newsletter.
Positive health outcomes around smoking are the ultimate goal, and the health and wellbeing of our whanau, tamariki, community and individuals are all positively influenced and supported by our Health Promotion team.
