Hāpai Te Hauora is the largest Māori Public Health organisation in Aotearoa and aims to increase opportunities for the communities we serve to enjoy good health and to be sustained by healthy environments. We do this by providing a strategic focus that is underpinned by evidence based research for the advancement of health and well-being for all. We work both regionally and nationally to address health inequities and provide strategic solutions for long term outcomes.
Specifically for the roles advertised, our funded role as the National Tobacco Control Advocacy Service holds a core purpose to promote public health strategies that significantly reduce smoking prevalence in New Zealand. Reducing inequities is central to this goal, and the service specifically targets Māori, Pacific and other communities disproportionately affected by tobacco-related harm. This service identifies, delivers and promotes effective public health and advocacy interventions that will create and strengthen smokefree policies, taking a leadership role at a national level and supporting local advocacy efforts. Our role is also to increase public and media understanding of what will get us to 2025.
The four key objectives of all Hāpai tobacco control advocacy activities are:
- To reduce smoking initiation
- To increase quitting
- To reduce the social, economic and health harms of tobacco
- To reduce inequalities
We are seeking four Community Activators positioned across Aotearoa (based on geographical regions/localities with the highest prevalence of smoking) to support the co-design and delivery of community initiatives enabling whanau to achieve and sustain a smokefree lifestyle supporting the efforts of the recently launched Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan. Strong connections and knowledge of local Māori & Pacific communities and Young People living with disabilities, an ability to work cross-sector and cross agency to partner with, and collaboratively activate communities to achieve a Smokefree Aotearoa is essential. An ability to think creatively, and activate spaces, places, and communities, with 'out of the box initiatives. These roles will work to enable community agency, removing any barriers to whanau and communities achieving their goals and aspirations free of an addiction to tobacco.
