In 2009 a key success for this roopu was working with communities to inform the review of Waitakere City Council Gambling Venue Policy.
In 2010 a key success for this roopu was the undertaking of a successful International Problem Gambling Conference in partnership with PGFNZ and AUT, and also the creation of a kaumatua reference roopu to engage in future gambling policy development in Tamaki.
In 2011 a key success for this roopu was the Consumer Voices action group project, which provides space for those who have been impacted on by gambling with a voice to minimize gambling harm locally and nationally.
Hapai is currently working to get Auckland Council to review their Gambling Venue Policy and implement a blanket sinking lid across the region. This will be an inclusive process where kaumatua, kuia, Marae, Maori organisations and consumers will provide advocacy for a sinking lid policy to reduce the number of "pokies" in the Tamaki Makau Rau rohe.
Hapai develops and implements problem gambling policy and other public health strategies to contribute to whanau ora at a local and national level. The problem gambling team provide information, policy development and support to Maori; whanau, hapu and iwi and other key stakeholders such as territorial local authorities on reducing gambling related harm.
Currently one of the key messages Hapai are promoting is alternative methods of fund-raising for communities, other then seeking funding from the proceeds of pokie gambling funds.

The name ‘Te Kakano’ or ‘the seed’, highlights the intent of the project to further strengthen public health initiatives undertaken by Maori, Pacific and other providers to reduce gambling harm.
Te Kakano project also consists of a board of seven experts in the field of public health problem gambling who represent mainstream, Maori, Pacific and Asian. This is the first workforce development public health problem gambling contract to be undertaken nationally for Pacific providers, Maori providers and Mainstream providers.
