Lucy RipiaHealth Promoting Schools Co-ordinator |
Health Promoting Schools (HPS) in Aotearoa/New Zealand is based on the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Whare Tapa Whä model for hauora/well-being and the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. It is an effective way to improve the learning outcomes and health and well-being of all students in the school setting through a whole school approach.
HPS focuses on schools as an integral part of the wider community and offers practical ways for children and young people, teachers, managers, parents and community members to contribute to schools and the wider community being healthy settings. It isn’t just about physical health, it’s also about Mental and Emotional Well-being, Social Well-being and Spiritual Well-being (Hauora).
Hapai te Hauora Tapui Ltd Initiative
Since HPS began in New Zealand the ‘Màori focus’ has become a significant part of the HPS model. A commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and the incorporation of Màori concepts of hauora are the basis for building a bicultural HPS approach. The appointment of a Màori specific workforce, including the Màori Strategic Coordinator (MSC) is a key part to the implementation of such an approach (Lee, 2008).
Hapai te Hauora Tapui Ltd took on the position of hosting the Maori Strategic Co-ordinator (MSC) in 2000. The role incorporates a Maori focus within Health Promoting Schools in order to ensure effective practice for responding to the needs of Maori.
