The Ministry of Health has today released the updated physical activity guidelines for children and young people aged 5 - 17 years in conjunction with Sport New Zealand and the Ministry of Education.
These guidelines update the New Zealand Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Young People (aged 5 to 18 years) which were developed in 2007.
The updated integrated guidelines include new sleep recommendations, updated advice on regular physical activity and reducing sitting time, as well as doing more vigorous-intensity activities and activities that strengthen muscles and bones like jumping and skipping at least three times a week.
The updated guidelines help support the work being done to reduce childhood obesity and ensure children and young people live well and stay well. They will be followed by Sit Less, Move More, Sleep Well: Active play guidelines for under-fives, which will be released at the end of May 2017.
